Ingredients
For the Graham Cracker Layer
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional)
For the Key Lime Filling
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
½ cup fresh key lime juice
1 tablespoon lime zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Whipped Cream Layer
1½ cups heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Garnishes
Fresh lime slices
Extra lime zest
Crushed graham crackers
Fresh mint leaves
White chocolate curls (optional)
Instructions
In a medium bowl, stir together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and optional sugar until evenly moistened. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, whisk the sweetened condensed milk, fresh key lime juice, lime zest, and vanilla extract until smooth and slightly thickened.
In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
Spoon a layer of graham cracker crumbs into the bottom of a trifle bowl or individual dessert glasses.
Spread a layer of the key lime filling over the crumbs.
Add a generous layer of whipped cream.
Repeat the layers until all the ingredients have been used, finishing with whipped cream on top.
Garnish with fresh lime slices, extra lime zest, crushed graham crackers, or mint leaves if desired.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best texture and flavor.
Serve chilled and enjoy!
Notes
Fresh key lime juice provides the brightest citrus flavor, but regular lime juice works well if key limes aren't available.
Chill the dessert overnight for cleaner layers and the best consistency.
For easy party servings, assemble the trifle in individual mason jars or dessert cups.
Add fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, or pineapple for a delicious variation.
Garnish just before serving to keep the toppings looking fresh.
Storage
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. This dessert is not recommended for long-term freezing, as the whipped cream may lose its texture after thawing.
