Creamy Coconut and Chocolate Pavê

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Chill Time: 4–6 hours
Total Time: About 6½ hours
Servings: 10–12
Course: Dessert
Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients
For the Coconut Cream
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (13.5 oz) full-fat coconut milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Cream
- 8 oz semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon butter
For the Layers
- 1 package Maria cookies or plain tea biscuits
- ½–¾ cup milk, for dipping
For Topping
- Toasted shredded coconut
- Chocolate shavings or curls
Instructions
1. Make the coconut cream: Add the condensed milk, coconut milk, heavy cream, and cornstarch to a saucepan. Whisk until completely smooth.
2. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.
3. Remove from the heat. Stir in the shredded coconut and vanilla extract. Set aside to cool slightly.
4. Prepare the chocolate cream: Place the chopped chocolate in a heat-safe bowl. Heat the heavy cream until hot but not boiling, then pour it over the chocolate.
5. Let it sit for about 2 minutes. Stir until smooth, then mix in the butter.
6. Prepare the cookies: Pour the milk into a shallow bowl. Quickly dip each cookie into the milk without allowing it to become soggy.
7. Assemble the pavê: Spread a thin layer of coconut cream in the bottom of your serving dish. Add a layer of dipped cookies, followed by more coconut cream.
8. Add another cookie layer followed by chocolate cream. Continue layering until you've used the ingredients, finishing with a creamy chocolate or coconut layer.
9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4–6 hours, preferably overnight, so the cookies soften and the layers set.
10. Before serving, decorate with toasted coconut and chocolate shavings.
Recipe Tips
- Don't soak the cookies for too long; a quick dip is enough.
- Use full-fat coconut milk for a richer coconut flavor.
- Semisweet or dark chocolate helps balance the sweetness of the condensed milk.
- For the best texture, prepare your pavê the night before serving.
- Serve well chilled for cleaner, more defined layers.
Storage
Keep your Creamy Coconut and Chocolate Pavê covered in the refrigerator. Because it contains dairy, return leftovers to the refrigerator promptly after serving.
