Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
2 cups granulated sugar
1¾ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder
1½ teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup whole milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
For the Chocolate Frosting
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
⅔ cup Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
⅓ cup whole milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
Slowly stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, which helps create an incredibly moist cake.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy. Mix in the cocoa powder, then gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk. Stir in the vanilla extract and beat until smooth and fluffy.
Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of frosting over the top.
Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides evenly.
Slice, serve, and enjoy your rich, homemade Chocolate Hershey Cake!
Recipe Notes
Use room-temperature eggs and milk for a smoother batter.
Don't overmix the batter to keep the cake soft and tender.
Hot brewed coffee can replace the boiling water for a deeper chocolate flavor.
Let the cake cool completely before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
Optional Toppings
Chocolate curls
Chocolate sprinkles
Fresh strawberries
Chocolate chips
Ganache drizzle
Whipped cream
