Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
1 cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup milk
¼ cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Pudding Sauce
¾ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1½ cups hot water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Stir just until combined.
Spread the chocolate batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder for the pudding sauce.
Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the cake batter.
Slowly pour the hot water over the entire surface. Do not stir.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the cake layer on top is set while the chocolate sauce remains underneath.
Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
Spoon the warm cake into bowls, making sure to scoop some chocolate pudding sauce from the bottom over each serving.
Serving Suggestions
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, fresh berries, chopped pecans, or a light dusting of powdered sugar.
Tips
Don't stir after pouring the hot water over the batter.
Avoid overbaking or you'll lose some of the gooey pudding sauce.
For an extra-rich chocolate flavor, add ½ cup chocolate chips to the batter.
Let the cake rest for 10 minutes so the chocolate sauce can thicken slightly.
Storage
Cover leftovers and refrigerate. Reheat individual servings gently in the microwave until warm.
